Being British, you'd be surprised at how little afternoon teas I've been to. This is the only one. But I know it's going to be hard to beat. I was lucky enough to be treated to a gorgeous afternoon tea at The Baglioni Hotel in Mayfair. This 5* establishment invited us with open arms - the decor luxurious and decadent.

The menu and spread of it is just gorgeous! I'm not one to enjoy sandwiches and pastries but everything served was so delicious. One of the standout sandwiches being the grilled mediterranean vegetable - we cheekily had to ask for a few more, they were so good! You won't have to worry about leaving hungry with afternoon tea - it seems very light but I felt so full after this luscious selection! My favourite had to be the scones with jam and clotted cream! A classic but nonetheless perfect every time.

Their Menu:
Selection of Freshly Cut Sandwiches
Cucumber and cream cheese on white bread
Oak smoked Scottish salmon sandwich
Chicken and mayonnaise
Grilled Mediterranean vegetable focaccia
Egg and mayonnaise on pan brioche with a hint of Tabasco and Worcester sauce
Home-made Scones
Freshly baked fruit and plain scones served with strawberry jam, clotted cream and Nutella chocolate spread
Selection of Cakes and Sweets from their Patisserie
Daily selection

The first thing you notice when you walk in is how decadent the hotel interior is - it feels very luxurious but surprisingly not poncey at all. I'm not used to being in "classy" restaurants much but the staff were so lovely and made us feel comfortable from the beginning. The afternoon tea is served in the Brunello Lounge & Restaurant where you can expect a warm, mellow atmosphere with comfortable, spacious armchairs.

An important update:
I first visited this place over a year ago and left with high expectations; so much that I brought my sister back here for a birthday treat. Unfortunately, they've had a complete makeover and the feel of it all is hugely underwhelming. Where before it felt warm and inviting but you can say goodbye to those plush armchairs and golden interiors and say hello to the feel of a cold, uninviting, overpriced cafe. We found a bone in one of our smoked salmon sandwiches (which they replaced with a whole plate of more salmon sandwiches - so unnecessary - how many salmon sandwiches can two people eat?), when asking for a loose leaf sencha tea, they gave me a green teabag, then continued to patronise me when I questioned it. At the end of it all, not even an apology was delivered and I left feeling embarrassed that I'd dragged my sister all the way here on her birthday. When I wrote to complain, I was offered to return for some 'amuse-bouche' - hardly worth an hours journey for some tiny finger foods. I still wanted to share my first memory of the place and lovely photos but sadly, it's taken a drastic downhill turn and I would not longer recommend.
